The Little Donkey

A little over two thousand years ago the early morning sun with its fiery-like brightness filled the dark blue sky. Rays colored yellow and gold shined on a donkey colt.

Except for a patch of white matted hair that grew in the shape of a star between his eyes, the colt was not unusual looking.

Together with his mother he was tied to a post that stood in the village of Bethpage in the Land of Judea. They were waiting.

“Mother, why was I chosen?” the little donkey asked.

She turned and looked at her son. A glimmer of light was quite visible in her eyes because she knew what was supposed to occur.

She spoke, and the words came ever so softly from her. “Perhaps I should tell you the whole miraculous story. Right from the beginning.”

His ears perked up. Eager was he to listen.

As she continued, the words flowed together, forming poetic sentences―the kinds of sentences he had never heard.

“Several years ago, I was told this by your grandmother―and I know now as I stand here remembering―how she sincerely loved telling it to me. For what she said had concerned her when she had been a young donkey, such as yourself. Oh, she praised that story. She must have worshipped it for the rest of her life.”

“Worshipped?” the little donkey asked. He had always heard that one worshipped God, not such a minor thing as a story or a personal incident remembered from years past.

“Yes,” she replied. “Worshipped. When I finish you will understand.” She was certain of this fact, even though her son’s face still expressed puzzlement. However, instead of explaining what she had meant, she immediately rejoiced and fondly expressed what had been told to her.

“A man and his young wife were on their way to Bethlehem. He was called Joseph. His wife was called Mary. Because Joseph was of the House of David, they had to journey to that beloved city to pay their taxes. This was an order from Caesar Augustus.

“It was a long, hard, and slow-moving journey. Little progress was made from day-to-day. Because Mary was with child―a gift from God, Joseph had to lead your grandmother at a slower pace. You see, son, your grandmother was carrying Mary on her back. I can just picture them now. Mother carrying that young, glorified woman along that earthly man-trodden road. Oh, how she must have felt. So proud―and, and honored, too. After all, who would have thought that she had been the one―the one chosen for the most important mission in the history of the world.

“Onward they traveled, going peacefully in spirit through the valleys and stepping ever so lightly―and so carefully―over the hills. Not one single pebble was displaced. Not one small clump of dirt was crushed. Oh, yes, my son, cautious were they.

“As the sun reached the center of the sky on the fifth day, the man stopped and released the reins. These reins held your grandmother so she could not focus her eyes upon the ground.
